چکیده
The edentulous mandible fractures are rare representing less then 5% in the majority of series. Their treatment represents nevertheless a challenge. The bone atrophy that happens in this situation is related with the higher incidence of treatment complications demanding some special attention to the therapeutic options. In contrast with the dentulous mandibles, tension and compression zones are in close proximity, allowing the application of only one plate for the fracture treatment. It is preferable to use screws without pretapping, and the rule that the weaker the bone, the stronger the plate must be is used, associated with the cautious use of cancellous bone grafting whenever the atrophy is marked or some bone is missing. Only with these measures is possible to reduce.

Intraoral extra-mucosal fixation of fractures in the atrophic edentulous mandible.
Atrophy of the mandible leads to a decrease in the bone mass, making it more vulnerable to fractures. A direct relationship has been demonstrated between the height of the bone in the area of the fracture and the incidence of postoperative complications of bone healing. Basic principles of fracture management in both edentulous and non edentulous patients are open reduction and internal fixatio...
متن کاملTreatment of edentulous mandibular fractures with rigid internal fixation: case series and literature review.
The aim of the study is to analyze the effectiveness of rigid internal fixation (RIF) for treating edentulous mandibular fractures. Because of the low incidence of fractures in edentulous mandible, there is no consensus of the optimal treatment for it. This study included all edentulous patients with mandibular fracture diagnosis, who were treated with internal fixation at the Hospital Italiano...
متن کاملSurgical Management of Edentulous Atrophic Mandible Fractures in the Elderly
Fractures of the mandible occur with a greater frequency in the elderly. This study reports three cases of edentulous atrophic mandible fracture in elderly patients treated with open reduction technique. Three patients who presented with edentulous atrophic mandible fractures underwent surgical management using open reduction and internal fixation. After treatment, clinical evaluations and post...
متن کاملAn unusual case of atrophic mandible fracture in a patient with osteogenesis imperfecta and on oral bisphosphonate therapy: Case report.
Fractures of severely atrophic (height < 10 mm) edentulous mandibles are infrequent and challenging to manage. Factors such as sclerotic bone and decreased vascularity combined with systemic diseases complicate the management of such fractures. Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a heterogeneous group of inherited disorders of type I collagen metabolism. Patients with OI characteristically present ...

Purpose: A prospective study of patients being treated for fracture mandible with miniplate fixation plus two weeks of Intermaxillary fixation was designed. The purpose of this study was to establish the better outcome with this technique mainly in terms of occlusion, good osteosynthesis and lesser complication. Patients and Methods: From April 2010 to June 2013 we treated 31 patients who fit t...
